Alex MarkinLet the ceiling go.
A shared mixed-reality experience of flying kites. Your room stays real, the ceiling opens into a vast sky, and a gust of wind becomes a vibration in your hand.
Can a room give you the feeling of flying a kite under an open sky?
I wanted to give today’s children a chance to discover what flying a kite feels like: guiding it through the air, waiting for a gust, feeling the line pull taut. This is a relaxation experience you can share with friends. There is no score to chase. Mixed reality lets the room become a doorway to somewhere much bigger: everything below the ceiling remains your real surroundings, while above it stretches an enormous sky.
Making that sky feel real became an experiment of its own. I built a volumetric cloud system for mobile devices, with simulated lighting, a day–night cycle and changing light direction. Haptic feedback connects the sky to your hand: when a gust catches the kite and tightens the line, the virtual reel vibrates. A small sensation that makes the distance above you feel tangible.
